Nearly a full month after announcing that Tennessee football was in his top 10, the Vols made another cut for an elite 2022 defensive back out of Mississippi. Josh Heupel still having them in play is a big deal.

Listed as a cornerback on all major recruiting services, Rogers now has UT in his top six. Coming out of Holmes County High School in Lexington, Miss., the four-stare across the board stands somewhere between 5’11” and 6’1″ and weighs somewhere between 160 and 170 pounds.

Joining Tennessee football in Rogers’ top six include the Ole Miss Rebels, Mississippi State Bulldogs, Texas A&M Aggies, Miami Hurricanes and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He announced all the schools Saturday morning on Twitter.

A few schools being eliminated from the last list was great news for the Vols. The LSU Tigers, Georgia Bulldogs and Oklahoma Sooners were all on that list. They would have been major barriers to getting Rogers to Rocky Top. Ironically, the UCF Knights, where Heupel coached the past three years, were also on that list.

Despite being listed as a corner, he has played both corner and safety in high school. Given all the questions surrounding the Vols’ secondary and the likely departure of Alontae Taylor and Kenneth George Jr. after this upcoming year, adding a guy like Rogers could be a huge boost for Big Orange Country going into the future.

There are still barriers, though. Ole Miss is a majority favorite on the Rivals Future Cast and 247Sports Crystal Ball to land him, and they are a plurality favorite to land him on the Rivals Fan future Cast. Miami is also getting a prediction on the 247Sports Crystal Ball.

Simply put, Lane Kiffin seems to be the biggest barrier in Tennessee football’s way to lure Rogers to UT right now. Getting the kid out of Mississippi could be tough, but the Vols should definitely keep pursuing him. Things could change depending on how 2021 plays out.
