Surrounded by questions, Tennessee football is set to give the public a first real glimpse of what it could look like heading into the future under a new head coach. Amidst all the drama over the past five months on UT, fans finally get to see some action on the field.

The Vols will hold their first Orange and White game under new head coach Josh Heupel Saturday. Holding a spring game under a new head coach and given everything that’s happened is relieving enough, but since it didn’t happen last year due to the pandemic, it’s extra relieving.

Obviously, Heupel is installing a brand new system on offense that everybody will want to get a glimpse of. His tempo-based spread is nothing if not fun to watch, and after the last two years, it will be a welcome change.

Making it more intriguing is a quarterback battle. Five guys are expected to compete for the job, but only three of them competed in the spring: Harrison Bailey, Brian Maurer and Hendon Hooker. What they do in this event could resonate in a big way.

A stable of new running backs, a go-to receiver, edge rushers and questions on the back end of the defense are all things to pay attention to as well. Simply put, it’s a fresh start for everybody, and it’s what makes this spring game so welcome.

The first question could lead to more answers on the next two. Until then, though, just enjoy this game. It’s a breath of fresh air for UT.
