2. Lots of fool’s gold on offense

Despite Harrison Bailey standing out, he had a lot of easy throws to make. His 73-yard touchdown pass to get things going was against the second-tier defense, and his 20-yard touchdown pass to Velus Jones Jr. was against a busted coverage and one that anybody could have made. That’s not to say that his deep balls weren’t pretty. It’s just to say that they were easy to make.

More from Vols Football

This was a staple for Tennessee football’s offense throughout the Orange and White game. The Vols were able to take advantage of things in the passing game that they’ll never get away with in SEC play later in the fall. That’s something they all have to be aware of.

One of the biggest examples of this is Jack Jancek, the leading receiver in the game with two receptions for 137 yards and a touchdown. He had the 73-yard TD grab, but his catches were against fellow walk-on defensive backs, so people need to be careful when celebrating his success and the success of the quarterbacks. It’s all relative.

To be fair, Cedric Tillman had multiple catches that he tipped to himself. That counts for something. Going forward, though, it seems safe to say that Bailey is the best quarterback on the field right now, but there’s still a lot for everybody to prove. The offense, as entertaining as it was, didn’t face a traditional SEC defense, and that’s why it’s hard to read into what it did.
