Tennessee football rematch vs. West Virginia in Charlotte set for 2028
The game that got the Jeremy Pruitt era off on the wrong foot will take place in the same setting a decade later. Tennessee football will face the West Virginia Mountaineers in Charlotte, N.C. again to kick off the 2028 season, according to the Charlotte Sports Foundation.
UT and WVU faced off to open the 2018 season at Bank of America Stadium in North Carolina. Then led by Dana Holgorsen, who is now head coach of the Houston Cougars, WVU beat the Vols 40-14 in what was Pruitt’s first game as head coach of the program.
That was the first meeting between these two programs, known for their location in the heart of Appalachia, and it obviously didn’t end well for Tennessee football. Will things be different for the Vols a decade later? We have a long way to go until then.

With Josh Heupel leading the program now, the Vols would be a much more up-tempo offense if their current staff remains on board when they face WVU. Of course, WVU is still running the air raid, even with Neal Brown now at the helm.
Simply put, if these two coaches are still at their respective schools by 2028, you’ll likely see a lot of points in this game. It’ll also be a testament to Heupel working out on Rocky Top, as no coach since Phillip Fulmer has lasted beyond five years.
When these two teams first inked their 2018 date, the Vols were still a rising program under Butch Jones back in 2014. The assumption was it’d be an epic offensive shootout that time, but instead Jones was fired, and that became Pruitt’s first game.
Whether or not things are different this time remains to be seen. However, almost everybody outside of Morgantown, W. Va. probably hopes Tennessee football just manages to make it a more exciting matchup this time.
