For the second time this offseason, Tennessee football has added a second transfer from a school. It’s also the second time the Vols added a transfer linebacker, shoring up a huge need given the players who have left the program.

UT added Michigan Wolverines transfer linebacker William Mohan. A 6’1″ 205-pound freshman out of New York in 2020, Mohan had just one tackle all year, at the Minnesota Golden Gophers. He will have four years of eligibility on Rocky Top.

Before playing for Jim Harbaugh, Mohan was a four-start outside linebacker on Rivals and a three-star on 247Sports and ESPN out of Erasmus Hall Campus High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. in the 2020 class. He announced his decision to join Tennessee football on Twitter.

More from Vols Football

Mohan’s commitment likely had something to do with new UT linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary, who was with the Wolverines last year. He follows quarterback Joe Milton as a Michigan transfer joining UT and Juwan Mitchell from the Texas Longhorns as the second linebacker transfer.

Given all of the early losses at linebacker this offseason, the addition of Mohan is a huge deal. the Vols lost Henry To’o To’o to the Alabama Crimson Tide and Quavaris Crouch to the Michigan State Spartans. J.J. Peterson and Martavius French are still in the transfer portal. Aaron Beasley and Aaron Willis were suspended during spring ball, and those suspensions still haven’t been lifted.

Although he is a bit smaller for a linebacker, Tim Banks’ desire to run more nickel packages while still operating out of a 4-3 base makes Mohan the perfect fit for the defense. He could likely fit in either package, which makes him very valuable.

With Mohan’s commitment, Michigan joins the USC Trojans as schools to send to players to Rocky Top. USC place kicker Chase McGrath and defensive lineman Caleb Tremblay have both joined Heupel and the Vols this offseason.

With so many other notable players in the portal, Tennessee football may not be done yet either, so keep an eye out for what they do. All of these guys will be able to play immediately this year given the NCAA’s one-time eligibility ruling.
