Only this team won the SEC regular season championship, the SEC Tournament championship and made the College World Series. It also did win multiple CWS games, another honor it shares with only one other team on this list. Taking all that into account, there’s no doubt that this is the greatest CWS team in school history.
Just months before, Helton was the starting quarterback for Tennessee football over Peyton Manning after Jerry Colquitt suffered a season-ending injury in the opener. Then Helton suffered an injury in the fourth game of the year. He came back for baseball, though.
The Vols had a dominant team and earned a No. 1 seed in an NCAA Regional. Just like the 2021 team, they went undefeated all the way up to the CWS, and they then won their first CWS team over the Clemson Tigers 3-1. This is still the only team in UT history to win its first CWS game. After that, though, the Vols did lost to the Cal State Fullerton Titans.
Still, Tennessee baseball won a second game against the Stanford Cardinal before being eliminated in another loss to Cal State Fullerton. With Cal State Fullerton winning the national title, there’s no shame in that, and this team is clearly UT’s greatest CWS team.
