2. Who leads the quarterback race?

It’s always a story when there’s a quarterback competition, and Tennessee football has one. However, that competition has been fluid from the start, beginning with the transfers of Jarrett Guarantano and J.T. Shrout.

Heading into the spring, the assumption was that Harrison Bailey, Brian Maurer, four-star dual-threat Kaidon Salter and Virginia Tech Hokies graduate transfer dual-threat Hendon Hooker would compete for the job. However, Salter then got suspended for the spring, and he has since been dismissed. Meanwhile, Josh Heupel added Michigan Wolverines transfer Joe Milton.

With Milton set to arrive in the Fall, the race is about to look much different. Bailey seemed to win the spring, but that doesn’t mean too much. Heupel will probably be tight-lipped about all of this at SEC Media Days, but it’s something he needs to address. Naturally, as a quarterback guru, the guy he picks as a starter will be a major storyline.

Beyond Heupel, though, Velus Jones Jr. and Alontae Taylor could both address this situation. Jones obviously can since he’s catching passes from all these guys, but Taylor is a leader and has to go against them, so he could talk about it as well. Simply put, this is a major storyline and will continue to be one until the season starts.
