Josh Heupel said Tuesday that the Vols anticipate having one starter by the opening week, but he didn’t rule out going to a two-quarterback system. Offensive coordinator Alex Golesh, meanwhile, said the Vols want to trim the list of quarterbacks competing for the starting job to two by the mid-point of fall camp, suggesting they are serious about sticking with a limited number of guys.
The room has two returning players from last year’s UT team in Bailey, the pure pocket passer who was the top performer in the spring, and Maurer, a dual-threat. Hooker, a Virginia Tech Hokies graduate transfer, is also a dual-threat. Milton, a Michigan Wolverines transfer who wasn’t there in the spring, is a pocket passer who can run when necessary.
Milton is the one guy Heupel signed specifically, and Heupel also recruited him while offensive coordinator of the Missouri Tigers. He also touted him multiple times during SEC Media Days. However, Hooker stands out with experience, and Bailey stands out with performance, so this could go in any direction.
