Last week: Defeated Vanderbilt Commodores 21-20

Coming off a 45-20 loss to Tennessee football, you’d think getting a win wouldn’t move South Carolina down one spot to next to last in our SEC Power Rankings. However, they beat a horrendous Vanderbilt team that was a week removed from a 42-0 blowout loss to Florida, a team that clearly isn’t that good right now.

A major quarterback controversy is back. Luke Doty was awful for South Carolina all game against Vandy, and Zeb Noland came in on the final drive, taking them 75 yards in less than a minute for the game-winning touchdown. Sure, Noland is the star now, but what will happen if he doesn’t keep up this play, which is expected? That remains to be seen.

Nonetheless, Shane Beamer’s team is 4-3 and two wins away from bowl eligibility his first year on the job. That was always the goal, and believe it or not, there’s still a path to reaching those six wins given the way the SEC East has gone.

South Carolina gets Florida and the Clemson Tigers at home, and neither team is ranked. An upset is possible there. This week, they visit the Texas A&M Aggies, so that’s a loss, as is a late home game against the Auburn Tigers. So to reach a bowl, they have to win one of those plus their road game matchup with the next team in these rankings.
