It was an overall successful draft for the Tennessee Vols with five players selected this year, but one player didn’t hear his name called despite a solid season at Tennessee last year.
Panthers pick Chris Brazzell II already sparking doubt across NFL media
Fan favorite quarterback Joey Aguilar is getting his shot as an undrafted free agent by the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound quarterback led the SEC in regular-season passing yards last season with 3,444 yards. Beyond that, Aguilar was 4th in the conference in touchdown passes with 24 and 5th in completion percentage at an impressive 67%. Aguilar stepped up massively last year after Nioco suddenly decided to leave.

Former Vol QB Joey Aguilar gets his shot with the Jacksonville Jaguars
Ultimately, it will be an uphill battle for Aguilar, but there is a lot to like about him as a prospect. He is a proven quarterback with not just a handful of starts, but plenty of experience playing the position. He brings the dog mentality you want in any player, refusing to quit and always giving his best effort. What Aguilar will need to improve on is his decision-making and his ability to read the field
There’s no question. He is worth a shot bringing in because it is a low-risk, high-reward situation. He might never be Tom Brady from a mechanic standpoint, but he does possess a natural arm strength, and good enough accuracy, but he needs to process the game faster and make better decisions. That will make or break Aguilar in the National Football League, as if he can read the game faster and make better decisions, he will have a chance to stick around for a lot longer. Right now, in Jacksonville, he will compete with Nick Mullins, who has had a decent career, for the backup role.
If you’re in Jacksonville, he is most definitely worth a chance based on his high character and willingness to give 110% every snap. Tennessee fans are most definitely happy for Aguilar as he deserved to get a chance, and not hearing his name called definitely hurt.
