Karen Weekly and former Tennessee Lady Vol Taylor Pannell have had some very public tension since Tennessee’s walk-off win over Texas Tech yesterday afternoon in Oklahoma City. According to Pannell after the game, Weekly was allegedly heard in the handshake line saying that Pannell made a mistake by leaving Tennessee.

After the game, Karen Weekly denied the accusations, saying that she simply told Taylor Pannell “good game,” just as she does with everyone in the handshake line. Many believe the controversy stems from the fact that Pannell transferred to Texas Tech after reportedly having a deal in place before last season ended. However, there is no proof that Weekly actually made the comments that have been attributed to her. As of now its just she said she said and a game of telephone.

However, after the postgame press conferences featured conflicting accounts of what happened, the situation escalated further with another twist. In now-deleted posts on X, Pannell’s father got involved and went off on social media, as he publicly weighed in on the controversy. He said stuff like "Karen Weekly was right that my kid did make a mistake and that was to play for her..."

He also posted a gif of someone rolling in money and it said, "Lost on the field but winning in life.." And to cap it off he said "Living rent free in a weak fan base heads is the best feeling waking up this morning. Looks like I'm still winning."

Weekly-Pannell drama deepens

I mean, this entire situation is just getting out of hand. There’s no reason to be going on social media and saying all of this stuff. And that goes for Vols fans too, don’t engage in this type of behavior. Both sides need to cool off and let the situation settle down. But again, this is sports, and everything tends to get taken to the next level, especially when former players and coaches are involved.

Either way, I don’t understand why Weekly would say it if she actually did. Obviously it would be unprofessional, but also it’s not the worst thing ever. At the same time, there’s no proof that it was ever said in the first place.

I can understand why there would be some lingering tension between Tennessee and Pannell if the reports are true that she had something lined up before last season ended. Coaches today are trying to recruit new players while also keeping their own roster together, which is a tough balancing act. When there are accusations of tampering, it naturally makes things feel more personal. Texas Tech has been aggressive in the NIL space and has spent a lot of money building all of its programs, so it’s easy to see why people connect the dots. If Tennessee ends up matching up with Texas Tech again, it could be another drama-filled contest with a spot in the next round on the line. Given everything that has happened off the field, the storyline would only add more intrigue to an already important game.

Regardless, Tennessee is sitting in the winner’s bracket with two chances to reach the Women’s College World Series finals, while Texas Tech is on the brink of elimination this afternoon. Given that, Tennessee fans may feel that Pannell made the wrong decision.
