After the huge 2026 recruiting haul put together by Josh Heupel and the staff, a lot of people are starting to wonder just how high Tennessee’s ceiling is moving forward. The Tennessee staff has been recruiting nonstop, and early signs point toward another really strong 2027 class. Some fans even think Tennessee could come close to matching what it accomplished in 2026, which was one of the best classes in the SEC and another major step forward for the program.
Josh Heupel, Tennessee could pull off a game-changing 5-star WR flip
Over Memorial Day weekend, Tennessee hosted its annual 865 Live event, which featured a loaded group of top recruits from across the country. Some of the biggest names in attendance included in-state four-star tight end Malik Howard, four-star offensive tackle Caden Moss, and five-star wide receiver Eric McFarland, among several other major targets.
All of the buzz around the program is even rubbing off on recruits. One recruit even said to Rivals that, "They (Tennessee) very well could be on track to be regular contenders for National Championships."

Tennessee could be on track for national titles
Honestly, hearing recruits view the Vols as a real College Football Playoff contender is exactly what Tennessee fans want to hear. That type of national buzz only helps recruiting continue growing. Once more, blue-chip prospects start believing Tennessee is a place where they can compete for championships, more elite talent naturally starts paying attention too. It kind of becomes a cycle. The more high-end recruits Tennessee lands, the better the roster becomes, and the more realistic playoff runs and championship expectations become in Knoxville.
What should fire up Tennessee fans the most is that it's not a crazy claim. First, the Vols have a young high-ceiling quarterback starting next year who will continue to blossom. Then, Tennessee has tons of talent in the system with Chaz Coleman, Ty Redmond, Gabriel Osenda, TK Keys, Braylon Stayley, Davis Sanders Jr., and many more. Josh Heupel has already proved he's a very smart offensive mind, and then you mix that in with Jim Knowles, an elite defensive coordinator, and then you have a great base to build on. The future is so bright.
What Tennessee needs to continue doing is stacking high-ceiling high school recruits while also adding impact players through the transfer portal after each season. In today’s college football world, roster retention is difficult for every program because of the portal, but it is still usually easier to keep players once they are already on campus and developed within the program. Yes, attrition is inevitable, but landing elite talent out of high school gives Josh Heupel and his staff a strong foundation to build around each year.
From there, Tennessee can continue using the portal strategically to fill roster holes and add experienced difference-makers where needed. That combination of strong high school recruiting and smart portal additions is quickly becoming the blueprint for building a consistent College Football Playoff contender.
The overall foundation is continuing to get stronger in Knoxville, and the Vols simply need to keep recruiting at a high level and continue producing results on the field, and the hardware should come.
