After knocking off Iowa State to reach a third straight Elite Eight, many fans are beginning to wonder if this could be the moment that finally pushes Tennessee's head coach, Rick Barnes, into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Tennessee silences doubters, reaches third straight Elite Eight under Rick Barnes

With the win, Barnes is now in a territory of elite coaches who have gone to six Elite Eights, including Dean Smith, Coach K, Roy Williams, Tom Izzo, and Jim Calhoun. When you find yourself on a list alongside March legends, it’s a clear sign you’re doing something special.

Rick Barnes has an amazing resume

The résumé of Rick Barnes tells the story. With an 861–434 career record and a .665 winning percentage, a Final Four appearance in 2003 with Texas, and five regular-season conference titles split between the Big 12 and SEC, his legacy is already firmly established. Barnes's longevity and ability to succeed in multiple places across different conferences show how he can adapt and succeed no matter the challenge.

He is the winningest coach in Texas history and is only 21 wins away from breaking Ray Mears' record at Tennessee. He has a countless number of NBA Draft picks under him, including perennial All-Star Kevin Durant, who played under Barnes at Texas. This upcoming Draft, he has a chance to have another top pick, as Tennessee forward Nate Ament could land as a top-10 draft choice.

Barnes has one less box to check

The only thing that would make Barnes' resume just a little bit better would be bringing Tennesse its first ever Final Four appearance on Sunday against Michigan. However, with the track record that the 71-year-old coach has, there is no question that he should be in the Hall of Fame.

It won’t be easy, but Barnes is a defensive mastermind who could scheme up something special to deliver Knoxville its first Final Four, knocking off a true Goliath in the process.
