Rick Barnes and Tennessee dealt injury blow with sophomore forward out for season
The Tennessee Volunteers are looking like one of the best men's basketball teams in the country, but plenty of injury adversity has arrived for head man Rick Barnes and his players. Last week, it was revealed that Cameron Carr will be out for at least a month with a thumb injury.
Now, more bad news has arrived for this team. That's because sophomore forward J.P. Estrella took to social media to announce that he will be out for the rest of the season. Estrella, a 6-11, 240-pounder, is set to have surgery on his left foot. Estrella announced the news on Twitter, penning a heartfelt message to the fanbase.
Tennessee sophomore J.P. Estrella is out for the season due to foot surgery
You've got to feel bad for Estrella. The season just got started for the Vols and he was hoping to make an impact on the hardwood for Barnes and Co. However, as he mentioned in his post, this has been a lingering issue for him and it has been decided the best move is to take care of it now. While it sucks for this campaign, it appears to be the right call for his Vols future.
Before going down with his injury, Estrella was averaging 4.7 points and 2.7 rebounds for Tennessee. He wasn't a superstar by any means, but he most certainly was a reliable option off the bench, one Barnes could depend on whenever he sent him into action.
Now, Estrella will be focused on his rehab and work to get back on the floor as soon as possible. For now, though, he'll look to help out his teammates in any way that he can at practice, while also supporting them from the bench even if he can't suit up. It's a setback for him, but one he'll be motivated to bounce back from.
