In the wild west era of college football recruiting, nothing is more important than keeping your recruits committed once they publicly pledge to your school. One of the biggest challenges for every coaching staff is holding onto commitments, because once a player commits, other programs rarely stop recruiting them. They continue to stay in contact and try to flip them. It’s simply the nature of the game.
4-star DL recruit leaves Tennessee and Josh Heupel out in the cold
Because of that, Tennessee has been involved in some major recruiting battles that have come down to the wire. Last year, Legend Bey was a high-profile target who never made his way to Knoxville, and Salesi Moa decommitted from Tennessee on signing day before ultimately following Kyle Whittingham to Michigan.
Recruiting is the gift that keeps on giving, though, and Tennessee has also had its fair share of major flips over the years.
According to Rivals, Tennessee owns one of the most significant recruiting flips in the 2027 cycle. The Vols successfully flipped Kesean Bowman from Oregon, giving Josh Heupel and his staff another major recruiting victory. Bowman, a standout from Brentwood Academy, is ranked as the No. 57 overall prospect in the nation by the 247Sports Composite. The 6-foot-1 wide receiver has reportedly shut down his recruitment, signaling that he is firmly committed to Tennessee moving forward.

Even in what is considered a “down” year for Josh Heupel and his recruiting efforts, he is still pulling off major flips and making waves on the recruiting trail. This 2027 class might not have the same top-to-bottom star power as some of Tennessee’s recent classes, but there is still plenty of talent making its way to Knoxville.
Perhaps landing David Gabriel-Georges would solve a lot of Tennessee’s recruiting concerns and provide a significant boost in the rankings, but for now, Bowman is a very worthy headliner for the class. What makes Bowman so valuable is what he can do with the ball in his hands. He is electric, fast, and dynamic in open space, making him a perfect fit for Tennessee’s offense.
When he decommitted from Oregon, it felt like the obvious outcome was that he would eventually find his way to Knoxville. However, in recruiting, you never truly know. A major program can jump in with a strong NIL offer, and suddenly the entire landscape changes
The future of Tennessee’s wide receiver room is one of the brightest in the nation. The Vols have five-star receiver TK Keys, who was arguably one of the best wide receivers in the 2026 class. Add in four-star Knoxville Catholic standout Tyreek King, along with Kesean Bowman, and Tennessee has assembled an impressive group of young talent at the position.
Braylon Staley is only a redshirt sophomore and could still be around for another season, while Mike Matthews also has the potential to remain in Knoxville beyond this year.
All in all, Vols fans should be fired up they have Kesean Bowman in the class, because he has the potential to join a long list of Vols wideouts that have gone on to do special things.
