The Tennessee Vols have some nice commits so far in the 2027 class, as they look to follow up a loaded 2026 class that featured three five-stars, including Faizon Brandon and TK Keys. However, the Vols only have a few commits so far, and it hasn’t exactly been pretty. That's not to say hit the panic button, but I had hoped that things would be further along than they are at this point.
Vegas odds signal Tennessee football is closer to Texas than many may think
The Vols currently have just three four-star commits and haven’t landed a commitment since official visits began. All of that leads to one thing, and it's that Heupel needs to get the ball rolling, and why not this weekend? Look at how much talent will be in Knoxville this weekend, according to 247Sports:
David Gabriel Georges – RB, 5-star
Kesean Bowman – WR, 4-star (commit)
Ta’Shawn Poole – S, 4-star
James Pace III – Edge, 4-star
Malik Howard – TE, 4-star
Kenaz Sullivan – S, 4-star
Q’Mari Hudson – OT, 3-star
Miller Westerfield – OT, 3-star
Robert Geathers III – S, 3-star
Jaden Butler – S, 3-star (commit)
Dylan Haley – CB, 3-star
Derrick Baker – QB, 3-star (commit)
Christian Mays – DL, NR
Heupel, Tennessee have a ton of talent in town this weekend
The headliner this weekend is five-star running back David Gabriel Georges from the Baylor School in Tennessee. The Vols staff has had him as their top overall priority in the class, regardless of position, for the past few years. Right now, Ohio State appears to be in the lead, but with a big visit coming up in Knoxville, Tennessee has a real chance to flip things.
Another big-time visitor is Tennessee quarterback commit Derrick Baker from Alpharetta, GA, who Georgia is trying to flip to the Bulldogs. Tennessee needs him to have a big weekend to keep him in the fold and away from Kirby Smart.
James Pace II is a very talented edge rusher, but right now he seems to be trending toward Auburn. Maybe a strong impression could change things. On the other hand, in-state tight end Malik Howard would be a huge pickup if Tennessee can land him. The Vols need more depth at tight end, and Howard is the type of player who could make an impact down the road. Tennessee only signed Luca Wolf in 2026, who has a ton of upside, but he’s still fairly new to the game and developing.
The two uncommitted four-star safeties on campus this week are both major targets. Tashawn Poole has made it clear that Tennessee is one of his favorite schools, and the Vols are hoping to seal the deal this weekend. Kenaz Sullivan is also a significant target, and Tennessee has a chance to set the tone before he visits Ohio State next weekend.
At the end of the day, this is probably the biggest recruiting weekend Josh Heupel has had so far in this cycle. Hopefully by this time next week, Tennessee has turned a big weekend into a few commitments.
