More from Vols Football

Once a great rivalry, Tennessee vs. Georgia Tech features two teams with plenty of connections. Most notable among them is Bobby Dodd, who helped turn the Vols into a national brand in the late 1920s before becoming a legendary coach with the Yellow Jackets.

The Tennessee vs. Georgia Tech series overall favors the Vols, who lead it 24-17-2.

Even after Georgia Tech left the SEC in 1963, the schools still met almost every year with the exception of 1974, 1975 and 1978.

But 1987 was the last year they met. Since that meeting, both schools have won a national championship.

This year, they both look to start off a new era on the right foot, as the Yellow Jackets have to replace Justin Thomas and the Vols have to replace Joshua Dobbs.

Although technically a neutral site game, you would think the game being in Atlanta favors Georgia Tech since that’s where their school is located. However, the Vols have tons of fans in Atlanta, and Knoxville is only three hours away. So with an even distribution of tickets, they should hold their own in the stands. And maybe they’ll even be louder.

Butch Jones leads the Vols for his fifth season in Knoxville to start the year, while Paul Johnson is entering his 10th at Georgia Tech. Jones isn’t just putting on display a new quarterback. But he’s got five new coaches, and Larry Scott is his new offensive coordinator.

Add in a new strength coach, and this is the first time Tennessee puts its offseason changes on display. This game could make or break the year for the Vols in terms of confidence. As a result, it’s a crucial match-up. And with Georgia Tech going 3-0 against the SEC East last year, the Vols are playing for more than just their own season.
