Tennessee football picked up a huge commitment for 2019 in the dead period. Three-star Florida quarterback Brian Maurer selected the Volunteers.

It took until the dead period and a wave of commitments beginning in early May. But Tennessee football finally picked up a quarterback for its 2019 recruiting class. And it couldn’t come at a better time for Jeremy Pruitt and co.

Pro-style Florida quarterback Brian Maurer announced on Twitter Wednesday that he is committing to the Vols. It came down to them and the West Virginia Mountaineers, and given the air raid that Dana Holgorsen runs in Morgantown, W. Va., that makes Maurer a huge pickup for Rocky Top.

Maurer’s commitment comes just a week after Tennessee football offered him during his visit to Knoxville. Clearly things went well, as the Vols moved right past the Ohio State Buckeyes to compete with West Virginia for him.

More from Vols Football

A three-star quarterback on Rivals, Maurer comes from West Port High School in Ocala, Fla. He already stands at 6’4″ 185 pounds, so by just adding some muscle, he’ll be the perfect size for a pro-style quarterback. Right now, he is ranked the No. 21 pro-style quarterback in the nation and the No. 66 player overall in the state of Florida.

According to MaxPreps, Maurer completed 57.5 percent of his passes and averaged 11.3 yards an attempt in 2017. He threw for 18 touchdowns and 13 interceptions and over 250 yards a game. Obviously looking to build on that in his senior year, Maurer does have a ton of potential. Here’s a look at his highlight reel.

As you can see, Maurer has a big arm. He can throw off his back foot and can be deadly accurate. Combine that with his size, and he’s the perfect type of quarterback to play in Tyson Helton’s offense.

With Maurer’s commitment, Tennessee football will likely have another great quarterback competition next year. Assuming graduate transfer Keller Chryst wins the starting job this year, Pruitt and Helton could not as for a better scenario than to see Maurer, JT Shrout and Jarrett Guarantano duke it out.

Even if Will McBride transfers, Maurer now gives the Vols significant depth at the quarterback position. And with already a Top 20 recruiting class, he’s the 13th commitment for 2019. So this is exactly the momentum the Vols needed going forward. Make no mistake, Maurer is a huge pickup.
