Could Georgetown transfer Mac McClung join Tennessee basketball?
Georgetown Hoyas guard Mac McClung is transferring. Could Tennessee basketball be in play? He does have connections to the Volunteers.
After withdrawing from the NBA Draft process, Mac McClung is transferring from the Georgetown Hoyas, according to Jonathan Givony of ESPN. McClung just completed his sophomore season, and people should keep an eye on Tennessee basketball in this scenario.
Coming out of Gate City, Va., McClung is from the Tri-Cities region. That’s about 20 minutes north of Kingsport, Tenn. and barely over an hour and a half from Knoxville. So UT is the closest Power Five school to where he is from.
Meanwhile, McClung has a connection to the school. His sister, Anna McClung, transferred from the Florida State Seminoles to join Rocky Top’s women’s soccer program, which she joined as a sophomore in 2014. You can read about her profile here on UTSports.
So Tennessee basketball could definitely be in the running. McClung would also be a great addition to Rick Barnes’ program as well. At 6’2″ 186 pounds, he averaged 15.7 points a game this past season and shot 32.3 percent from three and over 80 percent from the free throw line. Those numbers all improved upon his freshman season, so he could get even better.

As a high school baller, McClung proved his skills. He broke Allen Iverson’s single-season scoring record in five fewer games back in 2017-2018, and he led Gate City to its first state championship. So he’s a champion and a proven elite scorer.
Of course, even with the connections, the Vols would have an uphill climb to land him. They’ve got two five-star guards committed for this class already, and they have two four-star wingmen. Add in last year’s transfer from the Oregon Ducks, Victor Bailey Jr., becoming eligible along with Santiago Vescovi taking a step forward, and UT is loaded in the backcourt.
Given the fact that McClung will likely seek an eligibility waiver, he is probably best going to a place where he has a better chance to play immediately and where there’s an immediate need for him. Basketball insider Adam Zagoria named the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Maryland Terrapins as two potential landing spots, and both schools could use him immediately.
With that reporting and the personnel on Rocky Top, it’s hard to see how Tennessee basketball could land him. But the location and connections he has to the Vols should still give them an advantage, so pay attention to what he does.
