In the 2027 class, Josh Heupel and Jim Knowles have made it a priority to get the Vols involved in an immense number of defensive backs. The Vols have been hard at work on the recruitment trail, and the fruits of their labor should come to fruition in the next month or so, with the official visits season coming up.
3 recruiting targets Josh Heupel can’t afford to lose during official visit season
However, for one target that may come sooner than expected. Jarrell Chandler, a Knoxville native and four-star safety, has announced his commitment date for May 18, where he will decide between Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Clemson, and Miami.

Four-Star Safety Jarrell Chandler sets May 18 committment date
There’s no question that Tennessee wants Chandler badly, and they might be the favorite heading into the commitment day next Monday. Cahnder is ranked as the No. 91 player in the nation by Rivals and the No. 67 safety and No. 4 player in tennesse in the 2026 class. If Tennessee lands Chandler, he’d become the second in-state top-100 player in the Vols’ 2027 class alongside Kesean Bowman. Josh Heupel has always made it a priority to recruit Tennessee hard and keep the state’s top talent at home.
This would be a big recruiting win for Tennessee for a few reasons. Not only would the Vols beat out rival Vanderbilt for one of their top targets, but they’d also land a player that schools like Miami and Clemson really wanted. Miami was just in the national title game, and Clemson especially doesn’t offer just anybody on defense, which says a lot about Chandler’s talent level.
What I really love about Chandler’s game is how physical he is. He isn’t afraid to come downhill and make tackles, and honestly, he could even grow into a linebacker someday. He’s got all the traits coaches want. size, speed, length, and toughness. He's the prototypical high ceiling defensive back, but with extra physicality, which coaches will love about him.
It's worth noting that, under Jim Knowles' new scheme, adding as many safeties as possible is a major priority for the Vols since he uses three at a time. Obviously, if you have three on the field, then you need the depth behind them to be there, so getting Chandler is another big factor.
Overall, don’t be surprised if this recruitment comes down to the wire. Yes, Tennessee Volunteers football may currently hold the edge, but the other programs involved are going to make a strong final push. When a top-100 prospect gets this far into the process, schools don’t simply let them walk away without a fight. Increased NIL efforts, constant communication, and last-minute recruiting pushes are all likely to happen over the next several days.
Hopefully, Heupel and Knowles can pull this off, as Tennessee needs to start landing some of their top prospects, and losing a player from Knoxville rated in the top 100 would sting mightily. However, if Tennessee can pull this off, it could give them serious momentum.
