The moment Tennessee fans have been waiting for is finally here.
There has not been a bigger recruiting battle for the Vols than the pursuit of five-star running back David Gabriel Georges. Josh Heupel and the Tennessee coaching staff have invested countless hours into building a relationship with one of the most coveted prospects in the country.
Why Tennessee’s Josh Heupel tenure can’t be judged at face value
There hasn’t been a bigger recruitment for Tennessee since Josh Heupel arrived in Knoxville. Tennessee has recruited the Baylor School hard, and with David Gabriel Georges potentially being the prized gem of a class that doesn’t look amazing on paper, the Vols need this win more than ever. His recruitment is down to Tennessee, Ohio State, and Ole Miss, but for most of the process it has been a two-team battle between the Vols and Buckeyes.
According to Steve Wiltfong of On3, David Gabriel Georges has already made his decision. While the five-star running back is not scheduled to announce his commitment until July 22, the Baylor School standout reportedly knows where he will be continuing his football career.

David Gabriel Georges has made up his mind
Well, now Tennessee fans have to sit on pins and needles and wait to see where David Gabriel Georges decides to go. Both schools have a lot to offer, but at Tennessee, not only would he be the focal point of the recruiting class, he could also become the focal point of the roster.
What makes him such a strong fit in Knoxville is that Josh Heupel has proven he is willing to put his running backs in advantageous positions to succeed. With DeSean Bishop likely gone after next year, Gabriel Georges could have a path to becoming Tennessee’s featured back very early in his career.
At Ohio State, he would have a much deeper depth chart to work through before earning an opportunity to be the No. 1 running back. Isiah West and Bo Jackson are both sophomores and will likely be back in Columbus next season. David Gabriel Georges is extremely talented, but he would have to beat out two more experienced players who already have countless reps under their belts.
Meanwhile, in Knoxville, the path to playing time is much clearer. The opportunity to become Tennessee’s featured back could be his for the taking.
Not to mention, Tennessee can keep up financially. David Gabriel Georges is reportedly set to make more than $1 million, becoming the first high school running back to reach that mark. Tennessee has a strong NIL infrastructure, and the move to Adidas has only strengthened those opportunities. While Josh Heupel and Tennessee have made some NIL mistakes in the past with other players, this is not a recruitment they can afford to lose. Gabriel Georges is the type of special talent that does not come around often, and Tennessee has to do whatever it can to get him on campus next fall.
Once David Gabriel Georges commits in a few weeks, I’m sure the school that loses out will continue to recruit him. We probably won’t see the end of this recruitment until December, but one program is potentially going to be in a great spot very soon.
